Barberton Community Foundation offers the Julie & Jayson Humble Bright Beginnings Preschool Scholarship to help eligible Barberton families access high-quality preschool when tuition presents a financial barrier.

Created by Barberton High School alumnus Jayson Humble, Class of 1998, and his wife, Julie, the scholarship helps children gain the early learning experiences, caring relationships, and classroom skills that prepare them for kindergarten and beyond. “The chance to learn in a nurturing preschool changed the trajectory of my own life,” Jayson said. “We want Barberton kids to have that same opportunity.”

Why Preschool Matters

Results from Ohio’s Kindergarten Readiness Assessment for the 2024-2025 school year showed that 22.8 percent of Barberton children demonstrated kindergarten readiness.

Barberton children enter kindergarten from more than 20 childcare and preschool settings, with different schedules, curricula, and levels of access to structured early learning. Some families face tuition they cannot afford, long waiting lists, limited program hours, or other circumstances that make consistent preschool attendance difficult.

A high-quality preschool experience gives children opportunities to:

  • Develop early language, literacy, and math skills;

  • Learn classroom routines and prepare for kindergarten;

  • Build relationships with other children and caring adults;

  • Strengthen confidence and independence; and

  • Practice expressing emotions and managing big feelings in positive ways.

For some children, preschool may also provide their first consistent opportunity to learn away from home in a safe, caring, and supportive environment.

“Early learning is one of the most important investments we can make in Barberton’s future,” said Josh Gordon, Executive Director of Barberton Community Foundation. “Julie and Jayson are helping remove a barrier that keeps some families from accessing quality preschool. Because this fund is endowed, their generosity will continue creating opportunities for Barberton children year after year.”

About Julie and Jayson Humble

Julie and Jayson Humble understand how access to education and encouragement during childhood can shape a person’s future.

Jayson grew up in a large household where financial resources were limited. A nurturing preschool experience gave him an important educational foundation and helped shape his belief in the power of early opportunity. A 1998 graduate of Barberton High School, he now serves as Vice President of Engineering, Marketing, and Sales at Alpha Technologies.

“The people who’ve had a little luck owe it to give back,” Jayson said when the fund was established. “That’s why we’re taking this first step and starting a fund at Barberton Community Foundation. They’re providing the structure, the vehicle to achieve our goal.”

Julie, a Hudson native, grew up in a family that valued early childhood education. Her mother, Linda Sucheski, founded a preschool in 1979, giving Julie an early appreciation for the role preschool teachers and supportive learning environments play in a child’s development.

Today, Julie teaches AP Psychology, Sociology, and Government at Twinsburg High School. She and Jayson are raising two daughters, Claire and Adeline. Their shared belief in education, opportunity, and the importance of the early years inspired them to create the scholarship.

“This isn’t just tuition assistance,” Julie said. “It’s an investment in Barberton’s future leaders, innovators, and neighbors. When we lift up our youngest learners, the entire community rises with them.”

Scholarship Details

The Julie & Jayson Humble Bright Beginnings Preschool Scholarship supports preschool tuition for eligible Barberton families who demonstrate financial need. Award amounts are based on the family’s circumstances and the cost of the preschool program. Scholarship funds are paid directly to the preschool.

Families may seek preschool for many different reasons. A child may benefit from social interaction, kindergarten preparation, consistent routines, greater independence, or additional educational and emotional support.

A parent or caregiver may be working, attending college or job training, seeking employment, managing a disability or health concern, caring for another family member, or working toward greater family stability. A parent or caregiver may also have had limited access to education or may find reading and writing difficult while deeply wanting their child to have a strong educational foundation.

There is no single family circumstance the selection committee is looking for. The application gives families an opportunity to explain their child’s needs, their hopes for the future, and the difference preschool could make for their child and family.

Applicants should review the scholarship FAQ for complete eligibility requirements, required documentation, and information about qualifying preschool programs.
