Sokol Youth Sports Fund
Barberton Sokol Club created the Sokol Youth Sports Fund because it believes youth athletics build far more than physical strength. Through sports, young people learn teamwork, discipline, resilience, confidence, and what it means to be part of something bigger than themselves. Just as important, athletics create belonging. Every child deserves the chance to step onto a field, court, mat, or track and feel connected to a team, a coach, and a community.
That is why the fund invests in Barberton’s youth sports organizations, leagues, schools, and community programs that make those opportunities possible. By supporting the local organizations that serve young athletes, Sokol Club helps remove financial barriers and expand access so more kids can participate, stay active, and grow through healthy competition.
The decision also reflects Sokol Club’s deeper commitment to youth development. The lessons learned through athletics do not end with a season. They shape how young people show up in school, in relationships, in the workplace, and in life. This fund is designed to create lasting impact across generations, not just support a single team or one-time experience.
For more than a century, Sokol Club has helped shape Barberton through culture, service, and community connection. The Sokol Youth Sports Fund carries that legacy forward by meeting a need that exists right now. At its core, the mission is simple. When access grows, opportunity grows. And when more Barberton kids have the chance to compete, belong, and believe in themselves, the entire community grows stronger.
Why Youth Sports?
Picture a kid at the first softball practice of the season. After three swings and three misses, they are ready to walk off the field. The coach calls for one more try. This time, the bat connects.
That moment is where youth sports do their real work. Not in trophies or highlight reels, but in the confidence built through failure, encouragement, persistence, and belonging.
National research from the Aspen Institute’s Project Play shows that kids who participate in organized sports often perform better academically, build stronger social connections, and are more likely to stay active and healthy as adults. They develop emotional regulation, accountability, and resilience that follow them home, into the classroom, and into whatever comes next.
The benefits do not end when the season does. Sports teach young people how to take feedback, work as a team, lead under pressure, and keep showing up when something feels hard. Those are the same qualities families, employers, and communities want to see in Barberton’s next generation.
Too often, cost stands in the way. Registration fees, uniforms, equipment, facility costs, league dues, tournament expenses, and transportation add up quickly. For many families, those costs force difficult decisions, and too many kids miss out.
That is where the Sokol Youth Sports Fund comes in. The fund invests in Barberton youth sports organizations, leagues, teams, and community-based programs that create opportunities for local kids. Those organizations can use funding for equipment, uniforms, participation costs, and other essentials that make it possible to include more kids, enhance program quality, and remove barriers to entry.
For Sokol Club, this is about making sure the organizations doing the work on the ground have what they need to reach more young people. More access. More participation. More kids staying connected to something that challenges them, supports them, and helps them grow.
Why Barberton?
For more than a century, Sokol Club has believed that athletics build more than strong bodies. They build character, discipline, confidence, and community. Rooted in the Slovak Catholic Sokol tradition and guided by the belief, “A Sound Mind in a Sound Body,” the organization has long championed fitness, teamwork, and healthy living as a way to prepare young people for life.
That belief helped shape generations of Sokol members, and today it is shaping the Club’s commitment to Barberton’s youth. Through the Sokol Youth Sports Fund at Barberton Community Foundation, the Club is investing in local kids because sports teach lessons that extend far beyond the field or gym. They teach young people how to show up, work hard, support one another, and believe in what they are capable of becoming.
For Sokol, this is not a new mission. It is a continuation of values that have guided the organization since 1905, now creating opportunities for the next generation of Barberton kids to grow, compete, and belong.
